There seems to be a new nontroversy brewing about the color of my skin. I must respectfully disagree with an article written by Aisha Harris of Slate Magazine. I am not now, nor will I ever be a Penguin.
I am a kindly, portly, elderly human being, usually male (but open-minded to change), who is very real, yet still quite imaginary.
It also goes without saying, that I also disagree with Megyn Kelly of Fox ‘News’:
It is true that my image has traditionally been commercialized as being that of an old white male. That doesn’t mean that I am nor should it be used an excuse to change my species.
If we start de-humanizing children’s role models, I believe that sets a terrible precedent. Children should be encouraged, not discouraged, to believe that human beings can be kind and loving, too.
I think that Aisha Harris’ father was a wise man:
“My father replied that Santa was every color. Whatever house he visited, jolly old St. Nicholas magically turned into the likeness of the family that lived there.”
I am not white, black, hispanic or asian. My skin color is transparent, at least as far as children are concerned. Unlike most adults, children are color blind, until they are taught differently by their parents or society.
Let us also not forget that Santa Claus is a loving role model who brings joy to millions of children around the world. I exist solely in the hearts of children in whatever form they wish me to be.
P.S.: The historical Jesus was born in the Middle East. Therefore, he was not, in fact, a white male.
